How to Register Your Logo

Registering your business name and logo is a fairly straightforward matter that you must handle with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). If registered as a trademark, you can use your business name and logo exclusively whenever conducting business on behalf of your company. A trademark is a valuable asset to your business if you want to establish a strong, unique brand for your company.

Step 1 –

Search the USPTO’s Trademark Electronic Search System thoroughly for the name (exact or variations of the name) that you wish to register. See if any of the results come up with business activities similar to your own. This is important, because the trademark office needs to verify that your business name cannot be confused with that of another registered business.

Step 2 –

Create a description for your products or services, which you’ll need to provide on your trademark application, once you’ve verified that your name is unlike any other registered trademark in the USPTO database. Be as specific as possible about what you plan to provide to customers and use language that the general public can understand (layman terms).

Step 3 –

Prepare a high resolution copy of your logo to go with your trademark application. This will associate your trademarked business name with the visual representation of your business and prevent others from using that same (or a very similar) logo.

Step 4 –

Submit your trademark application via snail mail or online. Pay the applicable fees. It can take weeks or months to receive a reply decision on the matter of notifying you if the trademark was registered or not. If the trademark application is rejected, you’ll receive a clear explanation of why and how you can appeal. However you USPTO does not refund any of your fees.
